I don't when or why I started calling Crista Cwista... but I did and now I can't refer to her as anything else. I wish I could remember when and how I became friends with Cwista. I mean I know we met in Jr. High but I wish I could remember who indroduced themselves first and why we decided to keep talking and become friends. That was a long time ago...

Also... Im looking at this picture and thinking that these are still some of my best friends. This picture was taken 5 years ago.

I will admit that we had a little rough patch senior year, just because we are both very opinionated but as soon as we graduated, it was just like 8th grade again. I love Crista so much and I know that we will be friends forever. And now the whole reason I'm doing this post:

As much as it freaks me out, I am so happy and excited for her! It doesn't seem real to me that one of MY friends who is MY age is actually getting married! But it's really exciting. So congratulations Crista. He is a lucky dude.

On Worrying

My dad says this to me every time I see him.

He has a point, now that I am older sometimes my anxiety is sometimes debilitating. I am constantly thinking about what is going to happen next and thinking of every possible situation that could occur and how I would respond in these situations. It's exhausting.

But, in my defense, a bit of it is simply me being realistic. I like to have things planned. My dad definitely likes to fly by the seat of his pants, which is fun! I love that about him. But I like to think things through. I don't like for things to go wrong. There has got to be a happy medium, like live in the present and prepare for the future!

interesting how life is just a big balancing act.

How did your Super Bowl watching go? Quick feelings on the Super Bowl: I have four sports-loving brothers and a sports obsessed dad. At my house, you just watch it. There was never a question. I never examined whether I actually enjoyed watching it but I knew that there was always awesome food. Now that I live a away from home, Im starting to realize that I am pretty indifferent about watching it, my roommates turned it on, so I watched it. I did get excited about cooking some yummy things however. YUM.

I know this episode was a long time ago, and I am not getting into politics here but when I saw this I started thinking, everyone knows who Mitt Romney is and everyone knows he is member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Doing what makes you happy is not the answer to all of life's problems because there are going to be lots of things that we have to do that we don't want to do. But in your free time, do what you WANT to because if you don't, you will end up miserable. I don't understand why this concept took me so long to understand. Don't do things that you think will make others happy, figure out what you want to do and do it. Create your own life.

You know how when really cool bloggers (Cup of Jo) live in really cool places (New York), they do a little section about things to do when you come visit that cool place they live? Well I understand that Utah might not SOUND like the coolest place, but I live here and I love it! I also understand that most people who read this blog live in Utah so this guide is not exciting WHATSOEVER, but I think this will be handy for when I have guests visiting. (all purple words are links....)

Places to Eat:

Blue Plate Diner

The Blue Plate Diner is located in the Sugar House area and is well known for their incredible breakfast. It was featured on Diners, Drive-in's and Dives, featuring Guy Fieri who loved the Corn Beefed Hash so much he called it "Money Hash". Voted Salt Lake’s Best Breakfast by City Weekly every year since 2004. This is the last place Tay and I went before he left and I was very impressed.

Sunshine Cafe

Another great place for breakfast, Sunshine Cafe is located in North Salt Lake. Very reasonable prices with an awesome staff. Incredible French Toast and hash browns... ah I'm drooling just thinking about it.

Cutlers in Bountiful

Favorite place for a quick lunch, in high school we went here almost everyday. The sandwiches and soups are incredible and if you think those are good, you HAVE to try the cookies. It's hard for me to pick my favorite, I love the Lemon Melt -aways and the brownie cookies but I seriously think the glazed sugar tops all.

Burger Bar (Roy)

I am a sucker for cool vintage drive-in's so I'm obsessed with this place. It was also featured on Triple D, and I'm going to be very honest with you, the only reason I like this place is the atmosphere... the service is pretty slow and the food is good, but not incredible. So try it out! It's fun and the shakes are awesome.

Royal India

Oh.My. Gosh. Best Indian food EVER. And I LOVE Indian. Whenever my dad took the boys out of the house, Mom and I would order buckets and buckets of this yummy food. Always incredible, it's fun to dine in as well, awesome servers (Cynthia used to work here)

The Madarin

The yummyness of this Chinese food blows my mind. It has so many awards and reviews that I don't even know where to start. Katerina works here, her Grandfather owns the place (I laugh because their family is Greek and they run a Chinese restaurant)

Red Ginger Bistro

If you're looking for super inexpensive, yummy sushi, this is your place. Jane introduced me to this place and I've been back several times. I'm not saying this is fancy schmancy high end stuff but I LOVE it and it's easy on the college budget.

Red Iguana

Best Mexican food around. The service is incredible and be prepared to wait for a table. The environment is so fun and bright! It's also been featured on the Food Network.

Sammy’s (Provo)

Oh Sammy's. I always leave that place feeling so happy. Sandwiches are awesome and the shakes are my FAVORITE. They have cupcake and pie shakes, they literally put a cupcake in the blender with ice cream and serve it. Oh man I love those shakes! My favorite is the raspberry lemon cupcake and the peach pie shake. very hipster-y vibe to it which can be fun. Service is very slow but once you've had that first sip of that awesome shake, you'll get over it.

Orange Leaf

I know there are Frozen Yogurt places EVERYWHERE but when I'm on vacation, I still look for Fro-yo because love it so much so I thought I'd just share where to get the best frozen yogurt in town. yum!

Things To Do:

Hogle Zoo

This is an excellent zoo, nothing super extraordinary but make sure to take the train around! There's a new exhibit coming this spring called Rocky Shores, looks like it's going to be exciting!

Liberty Park/Tracy Aviary

I love this park! The playground has lots of water toys so bring swimsuits for the kids. You can also buy tickets to do the Ferris Wheel (remember the movie Charly? Yes. It was filmed here) bumper cars, carasel and swings. Make sure to play in the waterfalls and wading pools then head over to the Tracy Aviary to see many different bird species.

Jump On It

A big warehouse full of trampolines, some are sectioned off for younger kids, fun for the entire family!

Temple Square

They say that coming to Utah and NOT going to Temple Square is like visiting Rome and not seeing the Vatican.

Red Butte Gardens

Beautiful botanical gardens with little paths and hikes, fall and spring are awesome here! (I may or may not have wanted to have my wedding reception here since I was a little girl and if you steal it I will cut your eyeballs out)

Natural History Museum of Utah

Brand new museum with awesome dinosaur exhibits and hands on activities demonstrating weather and climate. Kids LOVE this place.

Living Planet Aquarium

I've been to a lot of incredible aquariums throughout the country (and a really weird small one in Mexico...) and this is not one of them but it's still really fun! The highlight is touching the manta rays. (which I could do for hours)

Lagoon

Amusement park! It's what fun is! So many good memories here... go on Wicked. It's the most fun roller coaster there. It's expensive to get in so if you're going, spend the whole day and do the water park too. Lots of awesome rides for kids and as always with these kind of things, bring your own lunch, food is expensive. you can do a bounce back cheap and go back within a week for $10.

And so many more! Don't forget Thanksgiving Point, The farmers market during the summer, ice skating at the Galivan center during the winter, and check out our awesome library. The list was quite a bit longer but I cut it down to my very favorites. I love Salt Lake!

I was looking back on a few posts and I realized that I am in college, but I don't blog about... being in college. Isn't that strange...?

Well kiddos, let me tell you about college. College is FUN! You can seriously do whatever you want to do. I'm serious! And, if it's illegal, they cut you some slack because college kids are supposed to do dumb things. But I'm not really talking about illegal things, I'm talking about you can stay out as late as you want, eat as much junk food, sleep, skip class, watch movies, not clean your room AS MUCH AS YOU WANT! Because your mom can't tell you not to. (Guys, I'm actually a really good college student and I'm very independent so I promise, I get enough sleep, clean my room and go to class but the point is, you CAN do whatever you want.) what else is cool about college?

Oh! You meet lots of cool people. That's good...

And the actual learning is fun! The trick is to take classes that you are actually interested in and then if you hate them... then you know that not what you want to go into!

For me I got to learn how to live with 7 girls. That's been interesting... haha but fun!

But before you get your hopes up and think it's the greatest ever, let me tell you, it can get pretty boring too. It's kinda a lot like high school only you have to walk really far to get to class. AND, you don't really have that solid group of friends that you did in high school (well I'm talking about myself... it could be the opposite for lots of people) Plus no Mommy (the worst) So... here's how it goes.

Get up, eat breakfast (that I cook for MYSELF, my mom used to do this for me...)
Walk 80 miles to class. (it's not 80 miles.)
come home
gym
shower
go to class

laundry (BY MYSELF)

Isn't that super exciting!??

Now you see why I blog more about life at home; way more fun.

But college really is a fun time of life. Right now, literally anything could happen. I mean, I have a tentative plan for my life... but it could change at any moment, how cool is that!?

Plus everything is all about ME at this point. It's sounds selfish... but really, I'm going to school to get MY education, taking whatever classes I want and doing what makes ME happy. (that didn't really work because the I is supposed to be capitalized anyway so you probably didn't put any emphasis on it when you read it... that's ok.)

Well now you know. And just so we're clear, everyone's college experience is totally different, in fact, next year my experience will probably be very different than it was this year. So to everyone who is still in high school, it's so fun! (just pray you don't get as homesick as I did) and to everyone that's in college/done with college, it's a good time, eh?

That was a super boring post. I'm not even going to read it. And I wrote it. Hopefully the grammar/spelling is as dreadful as always.

To ask him what day it was. He said, "uh... I'll ask mom. MOM! What's today?" I heard my mom laugh. Satchel got back on the phone and said, "Oh ya!!! It's my Burfday!!"

It's been a really fun 9 years. Sometimes I feel sad that I wasn't there the day he was born and I wish I had known him for the first month and a half that he was alive. Everyday I think about how incredibly blessed my family is to have had the opportunity to adopt that cute little brown baby with curly black hair. He has changed our lives. Man I miss that crazy boy!

I've been working a lot on loving myself and I can't believe the changes it has made in my life. I am happier and kinder and I don't care about what others think of me, that was just too exhausting. I compare myself to others so much less and I smile more. I gossip less; I used to build myself up by tearing others down but now... I just like myself! Not in a cocky, 'I'm the coolest person ever' way, just confidence and self esteem! In my research (internet and self-help books) I found a lot of information about taking care of yourself without feeling guilty. It's really interesting to me because whenever I sit down to read or watch a movie, I start feeling guilty, like there are so many other things that I could be doing. Christine Arylo wrote something that I really like:

"Why do we exhaust ourselves, accept overwhelm as normal, and wear busyness like a badge of honor? Think about it. We congratulate each other for multi-tasking, collude around about how busy we are, and we all drive ourselves towards some mythical state of balance that none of us seem to attain. "

Why do I do this? I seriously think I'm cooler than people if I'm busier than them! It's ridiculous. I have to remember that in order to accomplish the important things, I need to take time for myself to replenish and retain my energy.

Another thing about liking who you are: every person in this world yearns for one thing above all others, to be deeply loved. I think this is one reason so many girls think they will be happy for the rest of their lives as soon as they have a boyfriends or get married. Here's the thing people, if you don't like yourself, it's a lot harder for others to love you. and, "the love that you seek starts and ends with the love you have for yourself" (Christine Arylo)

I doubt this applies to anyone that reads this blog but if you feel depressed, sad or lonely, every night try to write down 10 things that you love about you! Qualities, quirks, talents, or just things that you are proud of. It'll make you feel better and when you like the person you are becoming, nothing else really matters.

Hi! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year. I spent the last week in sunny AZ with my super huge/loud really cool family and we spent one night in Vegas with more family. I know it's super cliche... but I'm doing one of those 'highlights of 2011' posts. Im going to split it into 3 sections, four months at a time because there are a lot of highlights! 2011 was a huge year for me, I graduated and moved away from home and had lots of incredible experiences. with all of the good came plenty of bad (so homesick sometimes! And since when do I get anxiety attacks!?) but we focus on the good around here! Welcome 2012! Best year ever.

Favorite Christmas Movies!

We watch a lot of Christmas movies around Christmastime.

We ALWAYS watch Home for the Holidays. It's got to be one of the funniest movie ever. Plus it's always fun to see a younger Robert Downey Jr.

I usually watch this movie by myself. About 678 times within 2 weeks. Sometimes my dad watches it with me... it's one of my favorite movies ever.

Christmas with the Kranks... it's awesome.

It's a Christmas Classic. If you don't watch it, you're a Grinch.

We don't actually OWN Home Alone or Santa Clause, but they always seem to be on T.V. Home Alone is pretty dumb right? Well, I've always thought it was just kind of dumb how this kid is just running away from bad guys. BUT. if you have never watched this movie with three little boys ages 10, 7 and 3, you've got to try it. They LOVE when the bad guys get hit in the crouch or they slip downstairs. When we watch this, our living room is filled with laughter.

People, I LOVE CHRISTMAS. I get butterflies and a giant smile on my face when I think about it. I am in love with Christmas(time). What is not to love about it? Lights, snow, hot chocolate, sledding, Christmas songs, shopping, family, food, giving, 12 days of Christmas (we call our grandparents and sing to them everyday) chocolate advent calendars (which I left at home so I will have to eat 16 chocolates in 1 day. Yay!) Christmas parties and movies, sleepovers, and Gabe is 4.... Santa still comes to my house, and I think he will for a while. Having little siblings is the best. And just the feeling of love and happiness! it's the best. If you're not obsessed with Christmas, shame on you.

I have to write about the last four things on yesterdays outline or I'll never do it. And for the record, I will never be as funny as Jane. Har Har. Seriously her last two posts have had me (whats a really clever way to say laughing so hard my stomach hurt?) laughing really hard. Jane, I really miss you... like... You're on the list of the top 5 things I miss about Bountiful. LUVS! (hopefully no one takes that seriously. I don't say LUVS! thats disgusting)

4. If girls are wearing super fashionable clothes and they are pulling and pushing and fixing their clothes all the time, I want to hurt them. The cutest thing is when you have cute clothes and you're comfortable in them. Also... If you are a normal, maybe slightly awkward girl and you feel like ~~boys~~ people will like you more if you wear a shorter skirt or a tighter/low cut shirt and you just want a boyfriend SO MUCH! Please don't. It makes everyone feel weird. If you're naturally slutty girl, go for it!

5. Yesterday in church my R.A. told me that I can totally rock a messy ponytail. I guess she's never gotten out of bed 8 minutes before church and thrown her hair into a ponytail... I didn't actually think in my brian, "I am going to be fashionable today and wear a messy ponytail..." I guess it just comes naturally for me.

6. This can be a touchy subject... I have quite a few favorite Christmas albums, but for right now I just want to talk about Bruce Cockburn's. (it's pronounced Coleborn... don't be weird) this album wins the most listed to award at our house. It was released the year I was born. So... I don't even know what Christmas would be without it. It really is just a solid album. If you're into folksy stuff.

7. Old-ness. Oh man. Old-ness can seem scary but this website always makes me feel really good about growing old! I am going to be coolest old lady!

and last but certainly (this is a little sad. I spelled certainly with an S. Then I fixed it) not least I just want to say that my mom and I should be professional comedians. We text each other all day long and we are so dang funny! I wish I had a good example... But I think our humor would be far too funny for you to understand.

Ok. I hoped this would be short. It's not going to be.

First I'd like to talk about life battles:

a) The battle between my love of food and my desire to be skinny.

b) The battle between wanting to be funny and NOT wanting to offend people.

Let's talk about this for a minute. Everyone is always saying how nice Steve Carell is. Seriously. The whole cast of The Office talks about how he is just a really nice guy. As Michael Scott, Steve is hilarious AND mean. He constantly making fun of Oscar, Kevin and Stanley and its ok because he is acting. It's just television but in real life he's funny and nice. Ok. I'm not getting my point across.

Saturday Night Live is all about comedy, the kind of comedy that is all about making fun of people, stereotypes and things. Some people are highly offended by impressions and skits on SNL. It's funny and potentially mean. I really don't know what I'm trying to say.

I adore Mindy Kaling. She has written and directed many of my favorite episodes of the Office and she is incredibly funny. In her hilarious autobiography she mentioned in passing that all Mormons are going to Hell which is, I am sure, a hilarious comment for those people who enjoy joking about Mormons (which I do on occasion) BUT to people who do belong to the LDS church it COULD be offensive. For the record, I am not offended, my respect for Mindy has decreased but I am certainly not offended. (But really, does she even know anything about the Church? Does she even know any Mormons? Because a lot of the coolest people I know are Mormon. Including myself...)

So what I am trying to say in that I am hyper-observant. I notice lots of really weird things that bug me about people and can be really funny to make fun of. But I don't want to offend people. But I have some funny crap to tell people. But I don't want to be mean. My life is REALLY challenging.

c) My love of sleep and my desire to get things done

d) My desire to have money and my lack of a job

I don't even know why I am writing this crap.

2. Amy and Will. As in Poehler and Arnett.

I just think there is no such thing as a more perfect couple. Besides my parents. Ok while we're talking about cute couples lets talk about my Dad's parents. They are old, okay? I'm not sure how old but my Dad's pretty old like... maybe 54ish and he is the youngest in is family so maybe his parents are 86ish. ANYWAY! They are totally in love. Seriously. It's adorable.

I don't personally know Will and Amy but they are a pretty classy pair. In her book, Mindy Kaling writes that Will and Amy are pals. Not like crazy romantic freak-os, just best buds.

3. Ellen scaring people. It's got to be one of the funniest things. Why do people like watching other people get scared? Here are some clips for you:

I get anxious. I just do. My chest gets all tight and I freak out and then I can't sleep. So I fall asleep to these cheesy "Deep Relaxation" mp3's and I'm obsessed with them. Anyway in stuff like this the creepy man with the oddly soothing voice asks you to find your happy place... IM NOT A FREAK!! It's relaxing. So. When I'm trying to decide where my happy place is I go here first:

That was fun. At 9:00 in the morning my mommy came knocking at my door with billions of balloons and Costco muffins and presents. I love my mother. She was sneaky too! I had no clue she was coming. I didn't have class until 12:30 so we sat on my bed and talked for a couple of hours. That lady is the most other-centered person I know. Nothing she ever does is about herself, it's always to help other people. I'm so glad I have such a wonderful mom.

my whole life I've tried to be classy. I have always wanted to seem like someone with the name Grace Holloway. It seems classy and composed. It's taken me 18 years to realize that no matter how hard I try I will still walk all the way across campus with my skirt tucked into my undies, people will still bump into me in the cafeteria and I will still spill my boiling chicken noodle soup all over myself, the floor and the 8 people nearest to me. No matter how hard I try I forget to shave my legs, I leave half of my hair out of my ponytail and I trip up a staircase with thousands of people and I get trampled. I'm missing an earring, I didn't pluck that lone black hair on my chin, there's a booger hanging from my nose, I forgot to bring a pen to class, I lock myself out of my room I can't stop biting my nails so my nail polish is chipped, my backpack is unzipped and everything falls out, I step on peoples feet and spit in their faces when I talk, I laugh my annoying laugh at all the wrong times. I try so hard and will continue trying but I'm not sure I will ever consider myself a classy gal.

I love my roommates, I love my new friends, I love how people are drinking and smoking and watching R rated movies all over campus and we stay at home and paint our nails and pop popcorn and watch a movie. I love Logan. I love my bike. I love this campus and I love laughing with all these random girls that we met at lunch or at a party or downstairs or at church. I love that I'm friends with so many people that I would NOT have been friends with in High School. I love my new ward. I love meeting people from tiny towns in Utah and big towns in Alaska, Pennsylvania and New York. I love Utah State University.

I miss my mommy. I miss her so much. I just want to hug her for 3 seconds. I just want her to hold me and tell me I'm doing a good job being friendly and outgoing and kind. I wanna watch a movie or go on a walk with her. I miss my bed. It was so big and so perfect and it was made just for me. Everybody has the exact same beds here. I don't like it. I miss the sound of the chickens squawking in the morning and I miss talking to dad while he plays in the garden. I miss Walker and his constant rolling his eyes at me and Nolan always being SO weird and Satchel always writing me nice notes and giving me hugs and Gabe wanting to help cook and mowing the lawn with me.

when i was little, every night after bath and jammies we went to our parents room and danced. my dad had a big barrel drum and a huge stereo with speakers all over the room. I thought the 5 disk CD changer was the greatest thing, all those CD's spinning around. We'd laugh and dance and jump on the bed until we were too tired to move and daddy would take us to our bedroom. those are some of my happiest childhood memories. now when i hear the music that we danced to, it feels familiar and beautiful. it's inviting, kinda like an old friend.

as a child i fell asleep in my mothers bed as she read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.
my greatest childhood dream was to be Hermione.
I wish I had counted the times I had read each book. it would be a lot.
I wish i could say i didn't cry as Harry, Ron and Hermione sent their children to Hogwarts. but I did.
They grew up. and now it's my turn.

for me, the books and the movies have never been about Harry. They've been about Hermione. They've been about good and evil and Hagrid and Dumbledore. have you ever thought that a picture had been taken of a certain momentous event, searched for it and realized that an event or moment that important can not be put into a photograph. it is a thousand tiny feeling and words, faces and memories. There is no way to actually show how small moments such as these have changed your life. no picture, no journal entry only the way you felt. sometimes it feels overwhelming to try to keep all of these in my head, as a part of who i am, sometimes i think that looking at a picture would be easier.

So Grace, tell us about how your summer has been going?
oh you know, pretty good. I've just been mowing lawns and changing diapers, all that super glamorous stuff.

And how do you feel about your fathers return from his 2 week work trip?
awesome! i missed him a lot but i am really upset that he took over his bed again. I got to sleep in it with my mom. it's an amazingly comfortable bed.

Is there anything in particular you are upset about right now? (possibly having to do with your father but not about taking the bed back?)
oh yeah! I've been begging my dad to take me to this restaurant on Main Street for like... MONTHS. and guess what happened last week? it closed. he promised that he would take me. bummmer.

Speaking of restaurants, any new ones that you're dying to tell us about?
OH MY GOSH. I loved Old Towne Philly Deli. so great. Nolan and I were the only ones there and we had a PARTY. and the food was seriously amazing. if I was a rich, not going off to college in 2 months person, I would eat there everyday. YUMMY!

And what've you been reading these days?

and the journal my mom wrote to me about when I was little. boy was i HILARIOUS. seriously. I was so funny!

well I all I can say is thank goodness for Netflix! (and my new macbook pro that I just spent a million dollars on)

2 incredibly beautiful books about 2 authors who became unlikely friends. Read them together and love them. I would suggest reading 'Autobiography' first to better understand Lucy's side of the story. Beautiful, beautiful writing, extraordinary story.

lots of people have talked about "lasts" this week. last yearbook day, last choir concert, last day of high school, last time driving to school and last time we'll see some of our peers. this week has made me think of a lot of "firsts"

First Graduation- 6th grade. we sang some Josh Grobin and I played the cello. good times.

First High School yearbook day- so many people and I felt like i had to get everyone i knew to sign mine. it was a hot day.

First Choir Concert- sophomore girls choir. we were clueless and probably sounded terrible but i guess i had enough fun to do it for the next two years.

First day of High School- was so extraordinarily exciting for me. exciting yet terrifying.

First time driving to school- Bountiful High was my first destination as a lone driver, no obnoxious parents in the passengers seat. it was October of my Junior year. I remember being nervous that i would get in a car crash or get pulled over... my parking job was... interesting.
